Security guard
A security guard is a privately employed person who is
paid to protect such things as property or people. These individuals
outnumber police officers by a large amount. While such guards may face
the same risks as police, they generally do so with less income, less
benefits, and less training.
The main way in which a security guard protects property is through
high visibility. Seeing that a place is being closely watched may be
all that a would-be trespasser or burglar needs to be discouraged from
committing any crime. Wearing a uniform can be very helpful toward keeping
up an intimidating appearance.
A security guard is capable of making a citizen’s arrest. However,
unlike a police officer, security personnel are never required to make
arrests. Their primary jobs tend to be to deter crime as well as to
monitor and report any suspicious or potentially dangerous activity.
Training for a security job may involve learning arrest and restraint
techniques as well as first aid and how to write a detailed crime report.
